Arch Bridges

Arch bridges are one of the oldest types of bridges ever constructed. They have great natural strength and instead of the bridge weight being pushed straight down, it is carried outward to the supports (abutments) at each end.
Arch bridges have curved arched shaped abutments at each end of the bridge formation. They are used to partially transfer the bridge’s weight. They will restrain the weight of the bridge, including the load it can carry, by throwing the weight in a horizontal direction. The next time you drive over a very long bridge take notice as to how many arches are included into the construction of that bridge. Long bridges are generally constructed by a series of arches.
Traditional arch bridges can be made from very simple materials which is an advantage for bridge contractors. Arch bridges must constantly be under compression and therfore masonry is a popular material used for the construction. Arch bridges constructed of masonry have a fill material placed above the arch because it can raise dead weight on the bridge. The masonry mix can also prevent extra tension to the arch ring as it faces heavier loads. Arch bridges include a system called centering which is the temporary use of false framing. Contractors realize that the bridges get stronger as the weight placed on it increases. Arch bridges can also be built out of nonreinforced concrete, brick, unprepared stone. These masonry built styles a re somewhat resistant to ground settlement and basically very durable but they require extra depths of of foundation because they are extremely heavy.

Modern arch bridges are constructed from reinforced concrete or steel and they the tension in their structure allows this style of bridge to carry a partial amount of load weight. This advantage eases the thrust against the abutments and makes them suitable for building on weaker ground support. But, modern arch bridges are not concidered to be “the real thing” because they are built from beams shaped like arches instead of the entire structure being a true arch.
There are three types of arch bridges that are used in the bridge construction industry today. Their differences may seem subtle but, depending on the use of the bridge, they make can make, or break, a quality arch bridge.
One type is the supported garden arch bridge which consists of an arch that supports the bridges deck by using a large number of vertical columns. Another type is the suspended deck arch bridge which consists of an arch that supports the bridges deck by using suspension tie bars or cables and sometimes utilizes truss type arches.

The last type id the tied arch bridge consists of a tie from one end of the arch to the other. This type of arch bridge is very strong and can withstand huge forces due to horizontal thrust.

There is also a modern evolutionary type of the arch bridge and is called the compression arch suspended-deck bridge. This bridge is constructed by light materials that are strong in tension. These materials include steel, reinforced concrete, and post-tensioned concrete.

So, in conclusion, when a bridge is planned for construction, the contractor has to research the area, the traffic, and the use of the bridge before decided on the necessary style. Arch bridges have to meet many specifications because they are carrying the lives of humanity.

Garden Candle Lanterns

Nothing will add instant charm to your garden than garden candle lanterns.  Garden candle lanterns are not expensive and come in a variety of different styles.  Some come on poles that are stationary and others are hung on hook like poles.  Still others are set on the ground.

Garden candle lanterns are not used as a way to actually light the ground.  They must be supervised when in use.  They are used as decorative pieces for parties.  But they make such a difference and cost so little money that your guests will be talking about your garden party for weeks after, just because you decided to add these little touches.

You can purchase garden candle lanterns in a number of different venues.  There are also garden candle lanterns available at stores everywhere, including home improvement stores and garden centers.  The choice in lantern that you use is up to you and your taste.

Some garden lanterns are put on the ground instead of up above the ground.  You can have several different options when it comes to getting garden lantern candles.  There are even those who can be put on the deck or even surrounding the deck.

If you have a garden that is oriental in style, you may choose to have garden lanterns that also reflect the style of the Orient.  If you have an English garden, you will want more traditional style garden candle lanterns.  The lanterns are usually glass enclosed but some are completely open.  In order for citronella candles to work in the lantern, you need an open lantern.

You can use any type of candles in your garden candle lanterns but you are better off to use citronella candles.  Citronella candles are often used to keep away bugs, mainly mosquitoes.  Once you light these candles in your garden candle lanterns, you not only lend beauty to your garden, but also have a way to naturally keep the mosquitoes at bay.    You can also use scented candles in the garden candle lanterns.  Scented candles can even make your outdoor garden party even more exciting and something for people to talk about the next day.

Garden candle lanterns can be attached to hooks that remain in the ground or they can be just embedded into the ground.  The lanterns are usually made of metal so that they can withstand all types of weather.  Most people leave their garden candle lanterns up all year long.

The only problem with garden lantern candles is that you have to remember to extinguish the candles when you are finished with your party.  Chances are that they will burn out naturally anyway, but whoever using candles, you should be sure to make sure they are out for good when you end a party.

Garden candle lanterns are the best way to add both light and charm to your garden.  You can find them in a variety of different places, including online.  They are inexpensive as well.  Few things will add beauty to your garden than these garden candle lanterns.
